My Sony laptop comes with a power management software called Powerpanel, that replaces the XP Home power options control panel.
My question relates to the setting for Lid Close Action. When I choose Standby there is no problem, the machine is obviously powering down. However when I choose LDC Off, I cannot tell what is happening. I also had hard disk turn off at 1 min. So I closed the lid and waited 2 minutes. The hard disk did not appear to turn off - the light continued to flash. And when I opened the lid, the LCD was on. Does is automatically come on again or did it never go off?
The reason I am interested in avoiding Standby and Hibernation is because I recently connected to a DSL router and needed to incorporate protection software. I was connected to the router unprotected for about 10 days and everything worked fine. But after installing Firefox, CW Shredder, Ad-Aware, AVG, and ZoneAlarm I noticed that after several hours in standby, my connection to the Internet was lost. This happens on a consistent basis, and it had never happened before. I am assuming it has something to do with the protection software. I tried repairing in the networking control panel and in the command line ipconfig release and renew, and I tried disabling and enabling. But the only that works to re-establish connection is to restart the computer. Which of course makes standby mode a bit useless.
I've posted on several forums, but no one's solution has helped. One person suggested never using standby or hibernate, but I need a way to turn off the screen and power down the hard disk before I close the lid.
Well, sorry for such a long post, but I really would appreciate a fix. It's not a major problem but it's very inconvenient.
Thanks.
Oh - would it be better to post this in another category like networking or Applications? It's incorporates a lot of different types of questions.
