| Dell Inspiron 1100... OMG
Just wondering, I have that old Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop that came out in 2003, and yes, that fan is LOUD. Though, at the beginning of when I got it, I could run simple 3D games like Half-life 1, Warcraft III, and the fan wasn't too loud, and my lap wasn't hot, well just warm at the bottom of the inspiron. NOW, fast foward to today, I can hardly run HL1, so I uninstalled it, and the dang lappy nearly burns a hole in my pants when I try to run WARCRAFT 2!!!! A 2D game at tiny resolution!!!! And the fan is louder than the laptop at full volume! Though, its okay if this problem is irreversible, or w/e, anybody have any ideas on what could reduce the hotness and the fan getting loud once in a while so I could run a simple 2D program (no more 3D, I have a desktop for that now)? I want it to really stop doing that, fan getting loud and heats up. (Might I add that in the past few months its heated up so bad so many times that it abruptly shuts off on me!)
Dell Inspiron 1100
1999Mhz
256mb RAM
20GB HDD, like 75% used
8lb laptop!
Beginning processes take up 212mb RAM, after ending it everytime, It uses 170mb. (if that helps, but it still acts up after no matter what.)
IF theres anything else I have to say for specs, tell me, this is all I know so far...

Spyware, Viruses, new programs? Any of these could be using up your system resources. Try running some scans and see if you installed any new programs that have something set to run on startup. |

Well, ok. Hopefully this laptop can survive a full system scan without overheating and burning out! |

Laptops are designed to run at full load without overheating. Maybe the fan is borked?

Try dusting the fan. Get some canned air and go "surgeon" on it to clean it, if your warranty is gone. BTW, My Thinkpad 770E burns a home in my lap by default. Especially when running FaD. |

I'd say it's a problem with the fan. I also have an 1100 (typing on it right now) and even when compiling software in linux (which is unbearably slow compared to my desktop) it never heats up that much. Does your fan ever turn on at all? Blowing it out might be a good idea as well. |
