Windows won't boot to desktop

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2140cds. I have Win XP installed and it worked fine for a long while until recently I tried to boot it and it got stuff in mid boot. When I boot regular I get the Win logo indicating it's booting with the little moving squares and then I get a black screen with a cursor. I can move the cursor but that it. So I pressed F8 and tried all different boot options, like last known good config, safe mode, debug, but nothing worked. It was the same for all types of boot. Black screen with cursor. Does anyone know anything i can do to fix this?

Can you boot using the XP CD? Maybe try a repair install?

Either that or your system restore CD may have that option.

Could you please tell me how you fixed your problem? Because I'm having the same problem and I'm going to need my files from this computer really soon!
