Dell Latitude C840 Display too small

I have a C840 I had to completely restore windows on. The screen was a small box when I started, but after several windows updates it filled the entire LCD screen again.

The problem is that the screen resolution is very very tiny. When I use control panel/display to adjust the resolution, it just kicks it back to the small screen (actually it flickers when I try to apply new settings but the size never actually increases)

Dell has a driver I tried installing it, but it has a two part installation with a download to floppy necessary for the bios. I don't have a floppy, but I could go buy one I suppose if this is what's gonna solve the problem.

Anyway, your help is greatly appreciated!!! Below is the dell page with the driver I was talking about. is there a way to use it w/out the floppy?

You should only need the video driver after you format. So don't worry about the BIOS. Just update the driver and you should be set

FN & F7 BOTH @ THE SAME TIME WILL FIX Your RESOLUTION

The FN & F7 BOTH @ THE SAME TIME WILL FIX Your RESOLUTION PROBLEM!
i'M Sure it will work on the Lat C-840 & Inspiron 8200 and it may work for other Dells as well!

It toggles between compressed & uncompressed Resolution modes?
Why it is needed? I dont know ask the Dell Gods in India!

Thank God for search engines or I still be pulling my hair out!

    Smile Thanks

I just had to reinstall XP home edition on a friend's laptop and couldn't figure out what was going on with the display. It was about 1/4 of the size it should be, centered right in the middle of the screen. Thought for sure it was a driver I needed to download. FN & F7 worked! Thanks so much!!!!

    Screen upgrade flash and resolution

i tried all those methods and while it boots for a few seconds in a better display mode, it SNAPS back to maximum resolution.
Any other bright ideas, cause im done...?

    Welcome to TechIMO!

Well for starters, i think your going to find that support for a laptop released originally in 02 is going to be slim. Honestly, it is antiquated and beyond long in the tooth. Your best bet is to buy a new netbook which will outmatch that beast of a laptop.

    Good luck though!

    Cheers.

I realized my problem. In the video settings in xp, when u click on advanced option, there is a tab under settings there that allows you to apply changes without rebooting.
It seems that those settings became available to me AFTER i did BOTH updates from dell. The driver and the flash. and yes, you have to use a floppy. unfortunately, dell is correct, it looks better at 1600x1200 but for us older farts, less is more,,,,seeing.
once that check circle is clicked on, one last reboot and your are fixed.

good luck and thanks to all.
