Hi jon,
I have a FXA49. Since I put W2K in place of WinXP, I love it. Aside from that, the hardware is great and it's been very reliable. Besides, I like supporting non Intel products. ;p

I've got the FXA49 as well. I love mine. Paid $1500 after the MIR. The Sony rebate is soooo slow. Best Buy came in 5 or 6 weeks.
Ptrper...
Did you run into any trouble putting 2000 on it?

Not to go off topic but 5-6 weeks is good... People wait up to a year for some rebates.... and some rebates never come through! I sent off a rebate and I got the money back 14 weeks later.

Hey Neodave,
Didn't have problems except for video drivers. I'm using a driver originally meant for a fujitsu C-series Lifebook. It has a similar video chipset, so if you want it, just ask.

I was actually thinking about changing mine over to Win 2000. Not particularly fond of the XP Home. And especially not fond of the rumored built in spyware.
Ptrper...Did you try the driver cd that came with the laptop? I'd like to try this but dread running into driver issues with a laptop still under warranty. Any specific drivers that you used?
Thanks

Hi Dave,
I did try the drivers disk that came with the computer; it kept blue screening on me, saying that a certain "video port" was not found. Otherwise, I would've used it. The sound driver worked just great. Other than that, nothing special.
What I did was to pull out the 30GB Hitachi that was in it and put in a 20GB Fujitsu that runs so much more quiet. In this way, if anything does go wrong, just put the 30GB hdd back in and take it back for warranty work.

Check out my Post on OS Forum on running a Sony lappy under Linux; also, on this forum my reply to Neodave's Sony Lappy Post. Too tired to type the Link --again .
DOOOOG
P.S. And do check out some problems--and pro and cons --about Sony Support.
Just FYI |
