help---laptop get connect to internet

i have an ibm laptop and when i insert the cable for my ethernet connection the plug will not stay in.(so therefore no internet connection).


what can i do to get this laptop connected?

There should be a little tab on the jack (see http://cabling.figment.ca/networking.../RJ45-Jack.gif for a picture). Is that there?

If the plug will not stay in, is the cable head broken or the Lan port? If its the cable head like in osprey4's picture, then the simple solution is to get a new cable. If it's the port, do you have a wireless setup?

brand new cable. and no wireless setup.

So is the port broken then? Is that why it's not holding? What you can do is buy a ethernet to PCMIA adaptor and plug through that. That's an option. Is the IBM still under warranty? If not, getting it fixed may be a little expensive... unless you want to stick a toothpick or something to lodge it in.

the laptop belongs to a friend of mine. i will find out if the port is broken or not. no the ibm is not under warranty now.

i'll tell her to try the toothpick or tape and see how that works.
