Problems playing dvd's on Toshiba 3000 Satellite

I recently bought a used Toshiba 3000 Satellite from work (only $20!!!) It is a PIII 833? Mhz w/384 MB ram. It came with a stock DVD player but none of the dvd's I put in will play smoothly. Is this a video problem or a RAM problem? I can only put up to 512MB ram in.

I would say it's RAM and could be bogged down by malware and years of junk build up. I'd do a clean install of the OS. It should be running much better after that.
