Forgot Password

Hi Everyone

Received a notebook from my sister in-law as a school gift, but she hasn't used it in about 3 years and can't remember the password, since she bought a new one. Is there anyway that I can go about using it still by erasing the old password she was so careless to forget. That would be great really need it for school right now.
Thanks

Wouldn't it be easier to just format the hdd and install a fresh OS?

If you really don't want to do that, you should first tell us what OS is already in there. I'm not that familiar with this issue but I'm pretty sure it's possible to override the existing password with a boot floppy containing some application meant for that kind of stuff.

A password protected lappy is an entirely different animal than a desktop. Many have a password locked hard drive and cannot be over-ridden. Due to tha fact that a lappy is much more prone to being stolen or lost the manufacturers have implemented a much higher level of security. Run some google searches for password and the brand and model of the lappy. You may have to have the former owner contact the manufacturer to resolve the issue. Replacing the hard drive might also resolve it. Lappys can have passwords in the bios or hard drive passwords in addition to Windows passwords. If you post the brand and model maybe someone else can offer more detailed solutions.

You have probably all ready tried this but how about 'administrator' with no password or her name with no password. Just start guessing unless she's unlike most ppl it's something she'll use or say all the time. Dog's name, DOB, phone number, first and last name as on word ect...
