will a laptop work with only a external hdd?

im having alot of trouble finding the caddy for the portege 7100/140 and was wondering until i do would the pc work with just an external hdd?

ok i found the caddy for the drive now do i need the hdd cover if im using the docking sation for the portege 7100 ? i really want to say thanks for everyone paitence this my first laptop and im just bouncing qusetions
