Hi and Welcome To TechIMO!
Your budget is under 3k for a laptop? If so, I highly suggest you look else where then alienware. They are to me and many others that know computers, the most over rated and overpriced company out there.
Check out a site like www.ibuypower.com
or www.cyberpowerpc.com
and they can get you a laptop with the same components for almost half the cost, literally.
Also, how much of a gamer are you, a serious one as in plays a lot and demands the best framerates possible. Or is this a more work oriented machine?

I'm still a little sketchy on how fast a decent processor would be or what AMD is, and whats the difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm |

Like SoloCamo said what kind of performacne do you want out of your laptop? If you plan on taking notes and stuff during class you will generally want a smaller notebook than say Dell XPS.
AMD is another processor manufacturer, and in my opinion, superior to Intel.
The difference between 5400rpm drives and 7200rpm drives is the speed at which they operate. Faster drives give faster performance. However with larger drives the performance difference is usually negligable.
I'd suggest looking at Dell notebooks or Sager notebooks. PowerNotebooks.com has some excellent deals on powerful notebooks.

Im somewhat of a serious gamer... lately i havent really been keeping up to what games are out there in the market and what they need. Personally i dont really care how big a laptop gets or how much it weighs, as long as it is able to keep up with most games right now and a little into the future, and can double for school use, then im fine. |

Dude, if you want a gaming laptop, look at the Dell E1705...I doubt that anyone can find a better laptop than that when it is maxed out(core duo, 7800 Go)...and no way is AMD better than Intel in the mobile area...Intel owns all with the Pentium M...and especially with the core duo. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=e1705s2&s=dhs
EDIT: Alienware just sucks...I wouldn't buy anything from them if I could get it half off.
And that E1705 can be had for around $1600 Maxed out...(there is a $650 off $2000 coupon they have now) |

How do the dual core AMD notebook processors compare to the core duo EXreaction? I haven't been keeping up with the mobile chipsets. I know Sager makes a sweet looking dual core AMD laptop that has potential for dual sata hard drives. |
