Lithium Ion Battery?

Hey guys, so my teacher has a new IBM laptop and is worried about the battery consumption. I told her it could be because the battery size is small (possibly 6-cell, I haven't checked yet) or because there are a lot of processes running. Anyways she asked one of the teachers at our school and he said it is because the battery isn't conditioned yet, that she needs to discharge the battery fully and recharge and repeat a couple of times b4 the battery will work properly. I told her I dont' think that is true with Li-Ion, but may have been true with Ni-Ca. Anyways, What do you guys think the problem would be? (BTW I don't think there is really a problem at all, just that the battery is small and this is normal usage)

Mita

Actually, the teacher is right.

Quote:
Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate.

It would be nice to condition the battery, but most of the times it's not needed. I'd go with the you thinking that there probably isn't anything wrong at all, but paranoia. As a basic user, she might have all the settings at max and the screen really bright and expect the system to run all day on battery. But things aren't that way in real life, average nowadays is about 2.5+ hrs with the screen at medium brightness.

Fried, you are saying that the battery life will become less accurate but won't affect the battery life? That is what the quote sounds like to me. . .

That is true, its when your meter will read about 40% battery left and then just cuts out on you in about 2 seconds, then you really should condition it through bios. Your battery remains the same, but it's your system that may need to calibrate with your battery. But the issue is what's your teacher complaining about? is it that or that the battery life isn't so good?

She said she was typing a word document and it took 18% of her battery, I don't think that is that bad, I don't know how long it took her but I am usre the screen was at max brightness and she probably had her WiFi on w/out knowing.

On a side note, I checked the other day and at bootup there are 65 processes running (that was on the morning after she got it, name brand computers :S)
