We're shopping for a college notebook and I've configured the following Dell for $1,861. This is pretty much what we want by way of a notebook, but I want to be sure this is competitive. Our time frame is 2-3 months, so there's time for comparison shopping.

1.0GB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 5400RPM
Modular 8X DVD+/-RW w/Roxio Digital Media™ and Cyberlink Power DVD™
No Floppy Drive
Fingerprint Reader for Added Security Touchpad with UPEK® Fingerprint Reader

90W A/C Adapter
Wireless LAN (802.11) Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card
D/Port Advanced Port Replicator
3-yr warranty (I could get a 4-yr total protection plan through our employee purchase program for not much more) |

looks nice, heh almost like a desktop replacement!!
I hope it wouldnt run hott, configured with all those high end parts, but im sure dell has put it through "the test" although i feel that if it were my laptop (which mine is similar) it would generate alot of heat. (probably battery too)
But other than that, it looks like an awesome laptop, they do sell cooling risers for laptops to sit on, i had to do that with mine, but hopefully that wont be the case with a dell

Pretty nice...but if you are not planning on using CAD programs, that Quadro might be a waste of money...but I am pretty sure you know that already.
That will really be a sweet system... :drools: |

That is a not a bad price, especially if you can score a four-year warranty through EPP for not much more.
The 14.1" screen seems kind of small, but that is a personal preference. If going widescreen, I like having a 15" or larger display. Going with a consumer Inspiron model instead of a business Latitude model, I tossed together a 17" notebook at Dell SB for a decent price.
Dell Inspiron 9400 - $1,781 shipped
17" Wide Screen XGA+
Intel Core Duo T2400
1GB DDR2 dual-channel
8x DVD+/-RW drive
ATI Radeon X1400 Mobility 256MB HyperMemory
Six-cell lithium-ion battery
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g
3-Year On-site Economy Plan
Windows XP Pro SP2 |

No plans to use CAD programs, no.
Rob, his preference is for the smaller screen and notebook. BTW, this is for MD1032 (thus my title). |

If the 14.1" screen is desired, then yeah, the Latitude D620 as configured is a good deal. |

Ok, here's another deal we spec'd over the weekend:
Powernotebooks.com PowerPro P 2:14 SUPRA
14" WXGA (1280x800) "Color Shine" LCD w/Intel® GMA950 w/up to 224MB DDR Memory
Pentium M T2500 2.0GHz Processor
1.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
60GB Hitachi Travelstar Ultra IDE @7200 rpm
8X DVD+/-RW
Intel Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g
6 Cell Li Battery
90W A/C Adapter
Port Bar III w/ video, 4 USB, parallel, 10/100 LAN,
XP Pro
3 Year Warranty - Lifetime 24/7 Tech Support
$1680
This is a "built on Asus" system. Any thoughts on the real-world difference between IDE and SATA for a notebook?
They said they would be offering an NVidia dedicated video card in May (not sure how much). |

That one you just configured is nowhere near as good as your first one...the extra $200 will easily be worth it for the dell. |
