If you're interested more in graphics performance than anything I'd suggest going for the 9700.... If you're interested in having a PCI-e graphics card get the X700... The 9700 and the X700 will perform pretty much the same.... though the X700 *MAY* have a slight edge....
How much are you willing to spend?

bleedy edge graphics isnt my #1 priority. I have a home built gaming system for that, but on the road I would like to have the option of loading up Doom 3 and playing it, being that it has a linux native release. The laptop is going to have linux on it, which as we all know isnt a gaming operating system. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1683422404
That laptop (the second one I listed) has a 9700, my mother has that laptop, and complains of it being very hot, although I think it just might be her being a pansy, but I dont want to have to deal with it overheating cause of the bulky Athon 64 in it, although it would be nice to have the power.
You say that the X700 and the 9700 will compete about the same, but yet the X700 on the Acer laptop lists 64mb of video memory while the 9700 boasts 128mb, they will still come out about the same even with the X700 having half the video memory?
$1000-$1500

For $1550 + S/H you can get this. I know it's slightly over your budget but it's an awesome system IMO... it's got the AWESOME Duo Core CPU, 1GB RAM and a decent X1400...
EDIT: I didn't see any benchmarks for lappy graphics cards but, *BASED ON* the desktop benchmarks I've seen and considering the fact that in the lappy version the X700 only has 64MB they're *PRETTY MUCH* equal....
EDIT 2: I'd suggest getting a Pentium M CPU (preferably with the Sonoma core) or, if can afford it, a Core Duo - both are very battery efficient and powerful with the Core Duo being the best money can buy ATM in laptops...

You can get an Acer 5672 Duo Core with x1400 graphics in the $1200 ballpark. It's a lot better than the first 3 listed. Built-in swivel webcam, 1gb of RAM and a 100gb HD wouldn't hurt either... |

Laptops are great if you need a small light weight portable computer that you can take any where. Although if it breaks down or needs fixing it is not as simple as a computer. If the keyboard breaks on a computer then you can go to a shop and buy a new one simply £20/$35. But if a keyboard on a laptop breaks it will cost alot more to fix. |
