I've never really spent much time looking into laptops but I am curious as to what some would deem quality brands. It would be nice to have one for when I'm on the go, deployed, on a TDY, or just plain away from my desktop. I usually use my desktop for gaming and surfing the web so that would be the game plan for a laptop. Any suggestions? Thanks folks.

Dell and Toshiba are both good brands.
I'm not familiar with the custom-made ones and lesser-known ones but others will respond wiht those.

I have always been a fan of Dells and IBM's, i think IBM/Lenovo (its new name) are the best laptops, a bit more $ but well work it with all their features and such. Very loaded laptops. My dad has had a couple HP's and 1 compaq and all of them i havent really liked that much. Toshiba makes a decent laptop, and companies like VooDoo who make custom gaming laptops which are good are very pricy, just like alienware. But for the most part the Dell XPS series laptops are a great bet for gaming and just plain old work too

i recently bought a Dell Inspiron e1705
it is (almost) fully loaded and plays COD2 at high settings at 1920x1200 resolution
I would highly reccomend this laptop unless you need an ultra-portable (its 8.4 lbs and big)

NEVER EVER GET A COMPAQ! I have had this stupid thing since October and have had problem after problem after problem...
I have replaced the HDD three times, the mother board once, the keyboard once, and the battery... It is still acting up ocasionally.
I want a Dell Insprion 1505 (The 1705 screen is 17" and weighs 8lbs, to big for me as I am mobile alot), or an IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T or Z series. My only problem, the ones I configure online cost $2000-$3000 and I dont have that much right now.

All depends on where your budget is at. I would reccomend a Dell. Just get one with Core Duo processor, and look for a good price! |

When do you think they will but the Core 2 Duo ( or whatever the next gen of the dual cores for intel will be) into laptops for the general public to buy. I heard alot about how those chips are really gonna blow AMD away.
You never know it might be good to wait for one of those laptop series to come out, if they will be out soon enough for you. |
