| Couple Questions that need answering
For some odd reason my notebook will not get a wireless signal, I am using a PCMCIA wireless card, it installs and i can connect to a network but i get limited or no connectivity. I have tried the following....
3 different brands of wireless card, all installed correctly with no driver issues
2 different wireless routers
uninstalling and reinstalling the PCMCIA driver
This is the first time i have ever dona F+R on a notebook so did I not turn something on? NOTE: I am not running any firewall or ANTIvirus/spyware software
My second question is that for some odd reason my drive will only read certain CDs/DVDs why is this? (its a dvd+RW)and finally my last question is for some odd reason none of my USB ports will pick up most usb devices like a external drive or a usb thumb drive but they will accept a mouse. Some say that the hardware was instlaled succesfully and some will say the opposite......
Thank you for your time |

I couldn't say what might be wrong with the optical drive... but it sounds like an issue of corrupted discs or bad drivers, unless the hardware itself is malfunctioning (lemme see... yeah, that about covers all options).
USB, on the other hand, has given me trouble at times as well. I've had two laptops that both had trouble recognizing hardware in any port but the first one that particular device had been plugged into - in other words, my wireless keyboard always has to be in the same port, and ditto on the webcam, etc. If none of your ports are accepting your external storage devices, however, then it's probably a PnP driver issue - most external storage should be automatically recognized by XP and Vista without any additional driver installations, so if they aren't, it follows that the problem may be with the drivers that facilitate that connection. Since the USB ports seem to work for some devices, the problem probably isn't the physical ports, but the drivers behind them. Try reinstalling your USB drivers, and if that doesn't work, you might want to run a repair install of Windows (not a tota reinstall, just one that fills in the gaps) to fix any native drivers that have been corrupted. It's certainly possible that neither of those will work, but they're both potential fixes for your problem. |
