| ever use Avvenu for file sharing?
I came across a program called Avvenu wheile perusing Google looking for apps for my Windows Mobile Treo. It is a program that loads on your desktop and allows a network connection to your computer over the web for you to access any files on the computer running the program. I thought it was going to be a program for WM5/WM6 but its just a web address like share.avvenu.com and then enter you account user/pass. Neat stuff cause I can download any files from my PC, etc. but what do you guys think about the security of it, they say its secure, but i wonder if it opens up a port on my computer that can in turn be used as an exploit?
Any comments/thoughts/etc? Anyone use this program?

"LogMeIn" does the same thing. I also question the security of it since you are using their servers instead of a direct connection. I try to stay with RDC where possible.

Yeah, I've heard of it, but use LogMeIn Hamachi instead.

Well I am looking for something (preferably free) that I can access files from my home PC (or work PC for that matter) on my PDA on the go..
Any suggestions? I dont think RDC will work great from a mobile device for files. I use it to reboot servers, etc. But transferring files... hmmm....
Does LogMeIn Free have a mobile version of the software? I looked into that Hamachi one but it is $$$

If you have a data phone just download what you need; IE: if you have a doc or something you want to review just email it to yourself and open the attachment. WM6 comes with mobile office. (Or use the data cable Or use the service you already listed to host the info and download as needed)
I fail to see the need to do anything more than that on a mobile device. The average mobile phone has a 200mhz processor and typically doesnt have enough internal RAM to operate as effectively as it could. Your not about to write a thesis for your masters or photochop that just taken photo for submission to your MBlog.
One step further, if your going through the trouble of uploading a file to a host for mobile access, why not just turn on your phone and plug it in and transfer it to the phone? (Ps: thanks for getting me thinking about this as my phone beeped at me earlier this morning about a low battery and i just plugged it in to charge!) |
