HP dv8310us maximum RAM capacity

I've been thinking of increasing the memory on my 8310 recently, but ran into some questions when shopping for RAM.

Currently it's running XP pro on the original 1024 (512 x2) it came out of the box with.
All the documentation indicates that 2 GB is the maximum.

Besides the limitation on available slots, what prevents me from exceeding the official 2 GB limit? I'm looking at a pretty good deal on 2 GB sticks of Corsair, I'm pretty much sold on getting at least one.

4 GB is a bit of an overkill, but assuming I had a desire to do so, what would make putting a 2 GB stick in each slot a bad idea?
