Dell Inspiron 1520 CD/DVD RW not working

Hi all

I think the kids got to the DVD drive

When I put a DVD in - there are problems reading the disc - ive tried many discs

to me i need to replace but was wondering if there was any other place to start
what should i do

What do you mean, the kids got to the DVD drive?
Try reinstalling the drivers, update firmware, replug cables.
You could also see if the problem is within windows, by downloading a Live CD version of Linux, like Ubuntu, and burn it using another computer (burn the ISO by ISO Burner, a free program), and then use the Live CD in the troubled computer.
