| Why Would Anybody Need a P-4 on a Laptop ?
I notice a lot of Lappy's are being promoted with a P-4;but unless you have the machine hooked up to a CRT or at least have good Gfx--not the mobile ATI Rage, what is the point ?
Seems like its just catering to the Publics desire to have the bestest--even if they can't make use of it.
Seems like a P-3 would be more appropriate.
Still a lot of P-3 lappies, though the CPU has been dropped fromthe Desktop market--perhaps needlessly on low Gfx machines.
Any benefits for P3 vs. P-4 on a Laptop ?

There are enough people obsessed with having the latest toys to sell plenty of these things.

I think a lot of people actually want a replacement for their desktop. So, they choose the fastest laptop they can afford. I think most of it is "hype" though. I would say a majority of laptop users, use them for text, e-mail, surfing and that's it. No need for a GHz CPU and 512MB RAM.
I use a PIII 1GHz at work w/ 512 MB, 20GBHDD and DVD-ROM...talk about overkill! |

I think it has to do with the fact that many people use their laptops as their primary system...

Throw your desktop away for a crummy laptop?
So, you want to throw upgradability and customization out the window for something that will be hopelessly out of date in 4 months?
I'll stick with a desktop for every day use. I can upgrade it when I like, mod it to hell and make it look real purty, and be all the more happier. Laptops are for business use mostly. They are NOT a replacement for a desktop.
A little P3-400 laptop would do me just fine for mobile computing. Anything more powerfull isn't worth my money. Want a portable computer? Mod a suitcase for your computer. |

A big trend is for our mobile salesforce to move to laptops with more horsepower so that they can demo our products better, seems the apps get more bloated.
Most people are also getting docking stations or replicators, built in DVD/CD-RW so it does replace their desktop PCs. It also saves them the trouble of getting everyting sync'ed up between machines. |
