I would have to agree with Mostafa. Toshiba makes some great laptops and they tend to handle abuse (accidental of course) much better than HP (a brand I wouldn't recommend at all, I see too many broken ones regularly).
If he won't be playing high rezz, graphic intensive games then I'd focus more on the amount of RAM and processing power vs the video interface. If you really need/want a 17 inch screen I'd recommend the Satellite Pro series. They aren't as rugged as the Tecra series but they can take it. I have had a Satellite for years and it has magically launch itself off many tables (mostly a sheet of plywood supported by the oddest of things) onto concrete floors.
The Tecra don't appear to have screens bigger than 15 inches, comes down to environment the laptop will be subjected to really. Laptop & Notebook Computers | Toshiba
