Is $600 Eee a Dumb Idea?

You can get a more powerful Acer Extensa for $500 and several Laptops for $600.

I'm not even sure it has a 20Gb SSD but an added Flash Thumb drive.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
The Eee has it's spot. Daily usage would not be it though. It's great if you like to walk down to the coffee shop and sit and have a cup of joe while you read online news or whatever. But if you plan on using it everyday, then I would strongly recommend you get something else. The screen size makes it a nightmare for everyday tasks.
But if I had my choice between the two you listed, I probably would still pick the Eee, and just use Xandros. It's really a nice OS for what it is...
Just my spare pennies.

Well the hardware is solid IMO. Our Eee has never had any problems at all. With anything at all, and we've owned it since about x-mas time.
The design is good for on the go, but nothing more IMO.
The way the software is setup is actually really nice.
"Easy Mode" for those less knowledgeable about Linux. Or you can unlock the full desktop mode if your into that kind of thing.
My only complaint is the HDD size. I understand SSD are pricey, but 4gigs isn't enough for all the programs I like really.
Plus, just the Asus name really. I've always been a fan, and probably always will be. Acer just doesn't strike me as the same quality manufacture that Asus does.

And one other thing, on the Eee they set up a recovery partition that is just as simple as it gets. Press F9 (I think it's F9 or F8. don't remember for sure) upon boot up, a simple menu pops up asking what you want to do. Highlight whatever option you want, and bam, fully restored to factory settings.

120/160Gig SATA Drive on the Acer Aspire One; so that covers one point.
I would imagine that restoring should be as painless.

True. I'm not saying the Acer unit is bad by anymeans. My personal preference would be towards the Eee though.
And just so I'm not dubbed a fanboy, I'm looking right at a Acer LCD.

LOL! Well price is a major factor for me and the Eee 700's are the only thing comparable since the One lowered to 350. Unless the 901's drop to around that price its not worthwhile for me to spend over 400 on a sub-notebook when i can get a deal on a laptop for 500ish.

(*hell, they had a toshiba satellite that i couldnt find an obvious problem with for 450 they were peddling at bestbuy after the told me they were out of the One's and the Eee's.*)
