Ok i'm looking for a netbook for UNI next year. I have heard that the MSI wind U100 is pretty good, but it lacks that professional look IMO. I'm sort of lost as this is my first mobile computer.
I have heard of other competitors.
Acer Aspire One
HP Mini-note
EeePC
etc
Anyone have any ideas?
i was looking to spend around $700 AUS which is around $500 US. |

IMO I wouldn't buy a netbook, if all you are doing is taking notes then yeah it will probably be fine, the small keyboard might suck but you can get by. If you plan on using it for anything else then you'll want to go with a real notebook.

Yeah, I can vouch for what Richeem is saying. The Eee is super nice to have, it does come in handy. But man is it a PITA to type anything on. The keys are just so small.
If your just gonna do like light note taking, and browsing here and there, then I would say you'll be fine.
But if you think you'll be typing on it a lot, then I would go for a "normal" sized notebook.
But if you are still interested in netbooks, I would recommend the Eee. Ours has been going strong for over a year now. We are running the 4Gb SS drive model, with Xandros, and really it's pretty slick. I would recommend 2Gb's of RAM, no matter what you get though. |

Sorry i guess i should of provided more info. I am going to study engineering. in AUS it is all maths+physics 1st year then the next 3 have some CAD design and you specialise in a certian area. I have recently upgaded my PC for uni:
Intel E8500
ASUS P5QL-E Motherboard
4GB ram
I have my old Graphics card Gigabyte 7600GT
My Grandma is going to buy me a laptop for uni, but i think she only wants to spend 700AUS.
I want to use the netbook/notebook for mainly taking notes, doing homework on the trainride home on weekends and maybe, some cad work not sure though.
There are tones of reviews on the net portraying how great the wind is over the Eee PC but i don't really like the look of it. If i was going to buy a wind i would probably buy a U120 when it comes out....
Any suggestion would be well appreciated.

Honestly for what you are wanting, I don't see a netbook being a good choice. For one I doubt you'd be able to run cad, two - most netbooks are worthless for gaming. There is the new NVIDIA Ion add-on that would be help out, but IMO I'd go with a regular notebook. |

Can you reccomend a decent notebook that would take care of my needs? something around the same price of a netbook would be ideal..
Cheers
edit: is it just me or does that sound confusing?

Well, thats not really the same price as a netbook. Most netbooks are in the $300 to $500 range.
That Dell you linked is a good notebook. It won't play games, but haveing a core 2 duo should help out better with 2d cad and office applications. As long as there is nothing 3d going on.
