At first glance . . . I would have said to replace the CMOS battery . . .
But, now I'm thinking along a different line of approach.
There's a crap load of HP's and Compaq's that are currently in one of the "HP Enhanced Warranty Programs" for defective MoBo's. What you're describing fits in with the symptoms that I've run across. Bad news is that I don't have the link here at home to check the model and pn out, but I will have the link Tuesday when I get back in the shop.
I can PM you the link or if you want, PM me all the info on the model plate.

Thanks Harder. Would the fact that I've messed with the motherboard void any warranty under the HP Enhanced Warranty Programs? |

I got the laptop back from California today, good as new. I sent it to the same place as Bellanca Guy. For anybody else that has this problem and wants the full info, here you go:
Bay Computer Solutions
1189 Tasman Drive
Sunnyvale, CA 94089
408-541-9828 www.laptopsprofessional.com
I went to eBay and bought a coupon from them ("motherboardexpert" is the username) for $8.95. The coupon is good for 10% off repair service and free return shipping. I spent $20.40 shipping it to them with insurance. Their total bill was $144 (after discount). So, the grand total was $173.35. |

This is such a bummer. There are threads like this all over the internet. None have a solid solution. I have a c300 with the same blinking light error. With mine I can actually get it to boot for a little bit with the holding the power button trick from this thread: Business support forums - Presario Laptop. Power Light Blinking. Screen Black.
But it goes right back to broken after just a minute or two. With this being so common, there has to be someone out there who knows what to do. |

| presario making me sorry-o
so i have pretty much the same problem except the fan stays on. just the power lights flash. the screen is broken, so i don't know about that..
guess i will just have to find a p&r on ebay..
okay so, i put my dead ass battery in and turned it on, and it shows that it is charging, but the power lights are blinking. the funny thing is, when i unplugged the adapter it still ran for 5+ mins.
so the MB is able to charge the battery but not start up?
could the problem just be my cmos battery? before i took the computer apart and cleaned, the fan would turn off after a couple seconds when booted. besides my screen being broken.. and the cd-rom and keyboard. hahaha it's a junker.
if i can get the mb back working i want to spend the money to keep this. if not then i will probably sell the working parts.
