Sorry to start this thread again, but I noticed that the last guy who posted before me was in April, and had no reply... so I'm desperate for anyone to help.
My laptop CD/DVD drive has stopped working, and no longer appears on "My Computer." Last time this happened, it was under warantee, and Dell fixed it. now they want to charge me. I followed the Windows Guided Help - did fine until it said to delete the upper and lower filters; they are already gone, apparently. There was another link cited to CastleCops.com, but it is down.
Please help - this is for my classroom, and I have a bevy of restless sixth graders who will rend my flesh if I don't get back into being "Ms. Tech-Fluent Teacher" soon!

I'm assuming this is a laptop. The thing to try is to look on the bottom of the laptop and find the screw that holds the rom mounted to the laptop. Remove it. Then remove the rom and then reset it in the slot. It could be a simple conection problem........If you try removing the rom......and replacing it......you should do a restart on it so the laptop re installs it.
If your afraid to pull the rom.......You could remove the dvd......and give the door a good slam....not too hard.....
