I partook of a couple of laptop deals today with the intention of only keeping one (had to get them before they sold out):
Deal 1: From Best Buy.
Deal 2: From Walmart.
Deal 1 is a HP G60 with an Intel T4200, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, Intel 4500MHD graphics with HDMI out and Vista Home Premium. This deal costs $100 more than Deal 2.
Deal 2 is a Compaq CQ-60 with an AMD Sempron SI-42, 3 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, GeForce 8200 graphics and Vista Home Basic.
Outside of the above differences, these laptops share the exact same chassis and screen as HP and Compaq are the same company.
I am comfortable with the $100 difference in the two laptops, assuming that the extras in the HP are worth it to you. I know that neither of these laptops is the most capable and that is fine as I will be using this for mainly for browsing, video and just general use. Please no comments that both of them suck and I should get something else as I am keeping one of these two. For the price, I doubt that we could find something with much better performance.
So if you had to choose, which one would you take? |

Deal 1. The the core 2 alone is worth the price increase over the sempron.

I would go with option 1. Its specs are better, and IMO, HP makes quality laptops. Free W7 upgrade!
Also, I don't believe the T4200 is a Core 2 Duo. A Dual Core, yes. |

+1 on the HP. Never cared for Compaq computers too much, always felt that they rated right up there with the old Packard Bells.

Compaq and HP being the same company, your getting basicly the same materials ...
Parts wise, no reason to go with the Sempron. Spend the extra 100 bucks and be MUCH happier. |

I think I am going to go with the HP, mainly on the strength of the free Windows 7 upgrade (and extra memory and better processor). I still have a few days to make a decision, so if anyone else wants to weigh in, feel free. |

So two laptops for ~$700?
The Wal-Mart lappy comes with Vista Home Basic. Can you even upgrade that version to W-7? |

I am not sure that Vista Basic can be upgraded or not, but I do know it does not qualify under the free upgrade deal they have. |

Just going by my past history with Compaq, I will admit it's been awhile since I've worked on one, have they improved? Anyway I agree why pay about the same for a weaker system. |
