No Boot After Password on Acer Aspire 5920

Hi all.

Will try to give as much info as poss.


Daughters laptop froze while she was logged into MSN and on Facebook.
Only way to switch off was by pressing and holding power button.
Since then it is able to get to the log-on screen, password is entered but will not go any further.
Vista home premium is installed. Once the password is entered, gets to the welcome screen with the vista "aero circle" but does not go any further. Have tried safe mode, with and without networking and normal start-up.
I can get to the BIOS.

A couple of observations.
When booting in "normal mode" and "safe mode with networking", if i press Ctrl, Alt or Del then the "aero circle" stops animating and i would guess that it has crashed.
However if i do this in "safe mode" i can press any of those buttons and the aero circle stays animated but the boot goes no further.
This happens after entering the password on all occasions.

I have looked at the user's guide and it seems i will be able to get it back to the original settings if i have to, but would like to try and sort this problem out first if i can.

edit: Seems to crash in safe mode aswell when i press the Ctrl or Alt. Also if left for quite a while the animation on the aero circle comes back to life.
