HP Compaq NC6000. Help! My mouse is possessed!

It honestly really is. Its a pre-used laptop that was repaired by a shop. I updated the drivers to the synaptec ones to get additional features (such as a scroll bar and no tap-to-click), but otherwise the computer is essentially as is. It is an HP Compaq NC 6000 with Windows XP installed.

Now normally the computer runs fine, the touchpad is great, and responsive. However, every once in a while (especially if I leave the computer alone for a couple minutes), the pad becomes possessed and acts as if a finger is already on it. Putting my finger on it (without moving it) makes the mouse shoot off at an angle halfway up the screen. Lifting my finger returns it back to its original place. Using anything becomes almost impossible as the mouse shoots off as soon as I touch or release my finger from the touchpad.

Now normally, right away, I'd assume that it was an issue with a short circuit in the touchpad, or something with it messing up at least. However, one thing sets this issue apart... When I close the laptop and it goes into standby, and then I open it again, everything returns to normal... Until next time.

    Any ideas?

What happens if you plug in a USB wireless mouse? Does it respond? If not, or if it acts the same way, you may want to check for a driver refresh on hp.com. You can let the site determine what you are running or, plug the part number in. hp.com has saved me many a time over the years, I have had an NC6000 in my lappie farm for about 9 years and it still rocks with Windows XP. Even has the original battery
