Bought a Compaq 1590DMT (P166) at a State auction last week for $30. Replaced the hard drive and now I got me a cheapy laptop for around $50. Works great. A little on the slow side but for the $$ it's a super laptop. Gotta love a bargain. |

I was just looking for something to use when I travel. I have a Sony Vaio laptop but couldn't see leaving it in a hotel room. I'd be mad if the Compaq got stolen but could accept it much more easily. |

Good find, Dave I've got a little Gateway 266 that I maxed out the RAM on and got a larger HDD. It already had modem and network PCMCIA cards, and aUSB port, so it's got all the connectivity I need. Total outlay was about $300 (not as good a deal as yours ) and it does what I need it to do when traveling and if it were swiped, the loss wouldn't be catastrophic.

I agree Tom. I'm thinking about getting a cheap PCMCIA card to see how it runs on broadband. Haven't tried the 56K yet but it's nice to have it. |

Dave, the 3Com and Xircom industrial-strength PCMCIA NIC's can be had pretty cheaply these days if you hunt around. Just make sure you don't get the Cardbus (32 bit) version, as, odds are, your slots won't support them. |

Dave,
My ol' P100 laptop runs very nice on broadband, especially when I use a text based browser in linux. (it doesn't have much ram) |

Yep... looking into the Linux situation now. I got win98 on there and it's not bad on cable. I want to put Linux on it to have something to play with when I travel. My new RAM should get here tomorrow. Puts me at 80MB. |
