Real common problems for laptops is that the power adapter breaks loose from the mobo...then it runs off the battery till it runs out..

Do you know anyone with a similar machine that you could borrow their battery?

i don't think so, i have tried every thing before, new adapter, new battery and still the same, other forums suggest it is the vga but i am not sure because when you plug in the adapter and press the power button the power led show for just five seconds and goes straight off.

Even if the GPU was faulty it should still stay powered on with the fans spinning and hard drive running. You just wouldn't see anything on the screen. It sounds like you've replaced just about everything imaginable. My only guess from there is that possibly the motherboard died.

    Just an idea, bluestone
but if you are having so much trouble--and probably spending money on your Latitude D620 (I had one until I broke a hinge and opened the case) and the 12" version --until I shoted out the mainbord by spilling coffeee on the KB)--
then consider buying what is probably a new one at Geeks.

The models that dont have a letter like B or C after them are new or near new and come with a 90 day warrentee. Avoid the letter B or C.

The latitude 630 is (near?) identical as far as I can see except the case is magnesium alloy.

Geeks periodically sells the 620 and 630 at low $200.

You would also have a spare battery and HDD and other parts from the purchase as you already own a D620
