| desktop vs mobile
I'm looking into buying a Sager from powernotebooks.com and am wondering about the difference between the mobile and the desktop cpus.
Is there a noticable performance gap between a 1.6 ghz mobile and a 2.0 ghz desktop? Or any configurations for that matter.
Do the fans on the desktop cpus really run practically all the time?
How loud are they? |

well as far as desktop fans running all the time, you can mod the case and the fans and what not so you have control over them, but it is a good idea to keep the fans on (plus the fact that the power sup. fan is always running). Notebooks have 1 fan that is on all the time (most do anyways).
Processor speed: There will be ALMOST NO resonable difference in your performance based on processor speed. What will determine the speed of your system will be (Depending what you will use the system for) RAM, HDD speed, Vid. card speed, etc.
Hope that helped. |

if i recall, mobile processors are made to be better in the higher heat of the laptop's small space.

well after about the 1Ghz proc. speed it all depends on the rest of the hardware you have. |

Damien, when I asked about the fan on desktop cpus, I meant when those cpus are running inside laptop computers. I'm wondering how loud the laptop will be, and if the fan will be running constantly.
Thanks for the info tho |

well on most laptops i beleve there is only one fan on the back, it runs all the time, and usually makes a negligable amount of noise, but still notice able. Most would prolly make the same amount of noise as a standard desktop fan.
If you want to go for quietness then the desktop would be better because you can have more fans running slower keeping the system cool with less sound pollution.
Now if you want silence -=- GO FOR WATER COOLED -=- heh heh |

processor-wise the difference are very small but there are other things to consider...namely expandibility and upgradeability.
with a laptop you are locked into the on board video that comes with the system and have very limited options as far as hd space.
with a desktop you can swap out the video card in a year or two and gain a nice performance boost, a real nice option esp. if you are a gamer. with a laptop you cannot.
with a desktop, you can add addt'l ide drives (nowadays most mobos have a 4 channel ide capability). with a laptop (and it depends on the model) adding a 2nd drive may or may not be possible. if so, it usually means you have to remove the floppy/cd drive. or if you decide to upgrade to a faster burner a year or two down the rd, you could move that older burner to anothe machine. this won't be not true if you have a internal laptop model.
while you can purchase laptops with dvd/cdrw combo units if you wanted to add more you're out of luck. with a desktop, have a cdrw drive, and add a dvd, and add a second burner if you like that sorta thing.
think of laptops as desktop systems modified for small size & portability. for that portability you pay more $$$, and are confined to a mid-size screen(14-15"), and as mentioned above severely limits your options if you decide to upgrade certain components.
unless you travel frequently or have limited space for a desktop (college dorm, etc) a desktop would be generally be a more flexible and cheaper choice.

Peoples, i don't think you a getting what avicus is asking.
He is buying a LAPTOP. They offer laptops with MOBILE P4's & the also offer laptops with standard/desktop P4's in them. He wants to know the difference between the mobile & the standard models of the P4.
Well thats the way i read what he is asking anyway.
I think the only difference feature wise is that the mobile P4's offer speedstep (or wotever intel calls it), which basically means when your using the battery it will actually slow the CPU down to a slower speed to reduce the drain on the battery to make it last longer. While the standard/desktop P4's run at full speed all the time.
Apart from that i don't think there would be much difference. Mhz for Mhz they should perform about the same (e.g. a mobile @ 1.6 would perform the same as a standard @ 1.6)

oh, i think i did. and if you look at the first sentence of my reply, i pretty much said the difference are small enough that it doesn't matter.
but i also posted that he should consider what he's buying. been a few threads around about people who purchased laptops and then wished they had not.
oh, btw, you can disable the speedstep feature when running on battery if you want the cpu to always run at its fastest. |

Sorry prester, but the way i read your 1st sentence still sounded (to me) like you were addressing should he buy a laptop or desktop PC.
