| ODM list project - Who really made your laptop?
Some people who frequent this forum may have noticed that a given laptop offered by a given company is the same laptop offered by a different company for a different price. This is of course because very few companies that sell laptops to the general public actually make them. For example, the Alienware Area 51m and Hive Mind(m) can also be found under the name of Sager (5660 and 5650, respectively). Also, by further example, Dell makes none of the laptops they sell themselves.
What I would like to do is, with your help and contributions, make a list of the companies that sell laptops and the companies who make the given laptops offered. Who actually makes the Dell I8200, anyway?
Here's what I'm pretty sure I know:
Sager - Clevo
Pro Star - Clevo
Alienware - Clevo
FOSA (5600P, 620S, 8880) - Clevo
IBM - IBM
Acer - Acer
The point of this idea is to give us poor slobs out here some freedom of choice when we find a laptop design we like. So, can anyone out there add to this list? |

I listed these as = ODM: who they make
IBM: IBM
ASUS: ASUS
ACER: make most of their laptops
TWINHEAD: make most of their laptops
APPLE: make most of their laptops
CLEVO: Sager & Pro-Star & Alienware & many more!
COMPAL: Dell Inspirion
QUANTA: Dell Latitude & Sony Vaio
GVC: Micron TransPort Trek/Micron TransPort Trek 2, "Green"
INVENTEC: Compaq Armada & Compaq Prosignia
ARIMA: Compaq Presario
MITAC: ?
FIC: ?
UNIWILL: ?
Some of these ODM's are no longer manufacturing laptops and some are just out of business.
CLEVO is currently the largest ODM.
GVC is no longer manufacturing laptops under that name. I believe they are now going by MaxTech. GVC made all of the "Green" laptops. They were marketed by Trogon, Micron, Chicony, Microflex, MaxTech and many others.
As really good website for ODM info is: www.orphanlatops.com
Hope this helps you along. |

| Does it matter? Even if an external company does make Dell's laptops, which I'm not sure is true - does it matter if Dell is the only company that offers the machine?

You're right it doesn't matter, if you like the DELL I8200 that's great. I believe the reason people are interested is that by knowing who really made your laptop you have access to better information. For example, the Micron TrekII was sold with a maximum processor speed of 366mhz. But, if you knew that it was really a Green 797 you would find that it can support processors in excess of 450mhz. Also if you ned parts for an older laptop you may find that most companies don't support models for more than 2 years. If you know what the "sister" machines are it can be easier to get those hard to find parts.
As far as the issue with DELL making the I8200, I'm not sure. But, I do know that the entire Inspirion line was manufactured by Compal. |

The DELL I8200 uses the same motherboard and BIOS as the Latitude C840. Most components are interchangeable. I hope this helps.
Quote from the Quanta Computers website:
"We sell our notebook PC products to several of the world's top notebook PC vendors including Apple, Hewlett Packard, Dell, IBM, Fujitsu-Siemens, Sharp, Gateway, Compaq and Sony."
You can find more info on their website. http://www.quantatw.com/company/quanta/eintroduce.htm |

I noticed this QUANTA: Dell Latitude & Sony Vaio. I see alot of Vaio's and they are all made by Sony, I even check with a Sony expert and he to says Sony makes there own laptops (AQSTECH.COM) |
