| Laptop Recommendation Please! =o)
Hi everybody!
Well I'm no laptop expert by any means and recently my Mom asked me to recommend a decent laptop for her to buy. She is not a gamer...she's pretty much a web surfer/e-mail checker/document user. I haven't researched laptops in a long time, so I haven't a clue what's out there or where to have her look for decent prices.
Any suggestions for "best bang for the buck"?
Thanks,
Mike

Will she be mobile alot with it? If not why get a laptop in the first place? Laptop monitors and keyboards can be cramped and get uncomfortable to some people
But if she will not be mobile will recommend the sager as they are supposed to be desktop replacements.
I have a Dell, love it and there support. And dell has alot of deals on their site.
What is the price limit? |

overall, dell makes a very good laptop line - they would be my irst recommendation.
ibm is also highly rated but is a little bit more expensive, so not quite as much bang for the buck.
there was a recent special which Doc posted for an HP notebook from staples for under $1000, i think. if that is still available, it's an excellent deal for an all-purpose laptop.
if you don't need to purchase right away, i would wait a little and see if another special comes along. i'm sure it will... |

She's definitely going to be mobile with it...price limit? Hmm, not sure to be honest...but I know she doesn't want to empty her purse on this one.
Any specific models I should look for in Dell? Or is it pretty much "build it yourself" so to speak on their website?
Thanks guys, this means a lot to me...

I recommend Toshiba. All the laptops i use are Toshiba, problems are minimum to non. .. Tech support is great and one of things i like is the frequent updates to their BIOS to keep you on track with the latest tech ...
Next would be Dell, because i read and heard nice things about this maker, though i didn`t use any of its products. Quote: |
but I know she doesn't want to empty her purse on this one.
| Ok, be a good son Mike and shell the hard buck for your mom ... be a good friend and get one for me too .. |

We use Toshiba and Compaq at work. The Toshiba laptops have been bulletproof. The Compaq laptops have been.........well, Compaqs (troublesome-if you catch my drift)

Might I recommend... please keep the flames off =)
The new Apple Titanium G4 Powerbook with 17 inch screen. I saw it at Macworld which was in town this last few days and I have to admit. Its probably the BEST, MEANEST, most BADASS laptop I have ever seen.
I have the Sony Vaio GRX 600 series, with the 16.1 inch screen. But the Apple , IMO blows mine away. It comes with all sorta stuff. From 802.11G, to Bluetooth, to the slot-in DVD burner/ CD burner, to the Nvidia Geforce4 440 graphics chip, and the light sensitive illuminated keyboard.....the list goes on...
Its badass to the max.

I will also recomend the Dells The Insperation serries should suit your needs well, maybe even the lighter ones. Another thing to maybe check is finding a brand you like and going to Best Buy or something and looking for specials. I just got a new HP laptop for $1k with a 1.6Ghz and 256MB RAM and a ATI mobility As for compaqs... those seem to be very fickle... all compaq stuff I have bought has died near instant but the Compaq Presario 1681 Laptop that my sister bought way back in 95 or so is still kicking and now in my possession. This thing should have died ages ago as she used it heavily on the road being a stage manager for concerts. Only thing I can find wrong is the Delete key popped off and the battery is finally going. And on that note.... get some form of protection. Best Buy offers a service plan that covers laptops from general wear and tear... get it repaired any where and mail em the bill and they will send a check... its international so thats a + but it will also cover your battery. The first thing to go on a laptop is normally the battey. I paid $199 for my serive plan and a replacement battery is over $200 so it was well worth the initial money for 3 years of protection Best of luck to you

Although I would love to recommend that one GB...I don't think Mom needs the baddest laptop on the planet just yet! |
