Installing OS in a Laptop? Pros/Cons

im strongly considering purchasing a laptop thru powernotebooks.com also i have been looking for any laptops with 2000 on them still, seems like almost everything under the sun is XP now *shudders* but the wonderful people at powernotebooks ship them either with no OS at all or whichever one you choose. undoubtedly it would be easier to get win2k preinstalled, but i dont want to pay the extra $140 or whatever it was, especially when i have a copy already. basically i want to know how much of a hassle it would be to install an OS myself, i dont have much experience with laptops. also if anyone has done business with powernotebooks id like to know what you think of them. thanks in advance

shouldn't be much of a hassle as long as you have the hardware drivers.

first check their website to see if they offer any and what exactly the hardware chipsets are for the video, nic, modem, etc...

Very easy. I did it many times with many OSes and many Laptops.

If you ever installed an OS on a desktop then installing on a laptop should be as easy!
Boot from the CD and let the wizard guide you

About the drivers issue .. well, i`m pretty sure you will find whatever you look for easily ..

The laptop comes with a driver cd.

Why the hatred for XP? Its the best Windows OS IMO..., just disable whatever you don't want and you end up with a better than 2K OS which looks and runs the same or better.

I mean XP Pro of course =) XP Home is not as good.

i just personally had a lot of problems with it, specially after sp1. i want to play games games games and xp just wasnt doin it for me. so im hesitant to shell out $ for a computer with an OS i dont like.
