A crosspatched utp cable will do just fine.
I know you can transfer via USB/IR too but I've never done that and have no idea how to do it.

I believe you can do a firewire desktop to laptop connection. It should be automatically detected with XP

Its commonly refered to as a "crossover cable", and it looks like a normal network cable, except some wires inside are crossed over so you can hook them directly to two computers. Its more specifically called a "CAT5 Crossover". It can also be CAT5e or CAT6, but any of the three will give you 100Mpbs operation. A CAT3 Crossover would work too, but would cap you at 10Mbps.
Just just need a network interface in both computers, and the crossover cable, which u connect either end to the respective computers.
You can get them just about anywhere that sells normal network cables, which would include just about any computer or electronic store that sells computer parts.
When you use a crossover cable, your essentially setting up a 2 computer network. |

Nothing
You just need to set up IP's and subnets and restart
Set up first one as
IP: 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0
and second one as
IP: 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0
All the other network settings you can leave alone. Just restart em (not even sure if you need to restart in XP), and it should appear under "My network places" on the desktop. |

Sorry, I should have explained.
"My Network Places" --R.Click, Properties--> "Local Area Connection" --R. Click, Properties--> Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) --> properties.
You can leave gateway and DNS blank. |
