I had a debate with a friend of mine regarding Laptops and Cooling. He told me "have you ever heard of a laptop Overheating"? My response was No.
Now My Question is, With the Processor speed Increasing so much these past months, Is the Mobile Intel P-4 at risk of OverHeating Problems inside laptops do to the Minor Airflow it receives.

Laptops run extremely hot. I've not heard that they'd melt, but I don't think it's far away
Ever tried the bottom of a laptop? You could cook an egg there

the cooling designs for laptops are built around the proccessor and video card. they do get hot, very hot and i would reccomend getting a colling pad for your laptops.
Im sure anyone who has sat there with the computer on there lap can tell you they get hot, and im sure during hot summer days with your house being hot overheating can occur. alot of the newer laptops are coming with more smart fans which will turn on and off and increase and decrease when needed. |

Well, I don't want to take any chances, so I went out and Got two Radio Shack 3" heavy duty Fans and Jimmy Rigged them so they Blow 60cfm over the Processor at all times. Lets just say, My lap top stays cools, to the Point Im cold. If Only I Knew about the "Coolpad" I think this is a great Idea. O well, My laptop stays cool, and thats all that matters. |

Yeah, no kidding, I agree with the rest of the guys.
Heat & battery life are two of the biggest issues manufacturers are constantly putting $$$ behind to research new and improved designs, special features, lower power consumption processors, chipsets, and so on. Take Intel's latest move in their mobile line for example.
Just because you might not hear of them overheating that much, doesn't mean that heat isn't a problem. Tell your friend they take painstaking steps to insure their products last as best as they can. They're doing okay, but is IS an issue.
Yeah, cooling pads are nice. A good step that can increase your processor's life span =) |

I have a laptop that runs 24 hours a day... The top gets warm, the bottom gets very warm. Definately never "hot" though...
BTW - It's a Dell Inspiron 5000 with a 600Mhz processor.

OMG, mine is desktop chip @ 2.0Ghz, any other suggestions than the cooling pad ? I've got one already and the laptop still can cook an egg with its bottom after a few hours. |

I to Have a 2.0Ghz Processor, but Mine stays nice and Cool with the Two 3" fans blowing 60cfm on it everytime I powerup. Hot Air Does come out the Vents, but is Blown away Instantly. Ya, It's Noisey but My Computer is nice and cold all the time. The one thing that does bother me, is when I take it with me. The Portable fan units, powered by the USB does sound like a good Idea, But they Miss the Vents. They only Keep the bottom of the Notebook cool, not the Processor. I wish they would come up with a Actual "Processor cooler" that you Can Take with you and be Powered by the USB without being so Bulky. You know, like a small External Fan... |

Anyway, these coolpads are not as good as you may think because it can only make a small difference while you're using normal programs. That means when you're using heavy applications, e.g. 3D games and everything that involve 3D, your processor will still make it to the 60C in half an hour and may boil you some water after that... I hope there will be some thing as cool as the AMD's cooler for our laptops. |
