I have a Dell Inspiron Model PP10X. When I press the power button, the lights turn on, then go out. The battery light blinks every so often.
Is this something that is worth fixing, or can be fixed? I would be willing to spend up to $200 to get it fixed.

sounds like a typical bad battery, can you try it from a power adapter? |

That is with the AC adapter. It does the same when I use the battery.
I am hoping it is just a power supply problem.

It may be a power supply problem, a prob with the mobo itself or the cpu may need to be reseated.
At this point I would say the laptop is having an issue with the power supply. Internal problem.... not the power adapter since you mentioned it happens with the battery in.
Do you get a fan or cd spin when you try to power on? If so, that may help to rule out a mobo issue.
Also were you using AC or battery the last time it worked? The reason I ask is because you may have had the adapter fail, the lap would have switched to battery power and would have ran the battery down, and if the adapter is faulty the battery would not have been able to recharge to power the unit back on.
You may try reseating your RAM, Dells don't like to power on when the RAM is defective. Most lappies will show a post error with defective RAM or some other tell tale sign. Some Dells just flat out won't power up. If you have two sticks in, try them both seperately when powering back on.
Post back and let us know..... |

No the fans and cd don't spin up. I can hear the hard drive starting, and the hard drive light lights up. Then the computer shuts down. According to the Dell Website the fans only come on when the computer is hot, or needs cooling.

I don't know about the last time it was used. I found it while dumpster diving. It is in great shape outwardly, someone took care of it very well, expect for some dust in the fans. I figure I can't buy a used one for $200 bucks. So if I can get this fixed for that price or less, I am ahead of the game. Esp a Pent3 laptop!!!

Having alittle trouble with one of the screws on the mem panel. Will try that if I can get it loose.
thanks for ur help

I called around to a few places. One wanted $75 dollars an hour to check it out. So I was surprise to say the least when I found this one place in the Yellow Pages.
He said he would check it out for free. He came down to pick it up. I got his name and drivers id. Of course he could say he never picked it up from me. But as I didn't pay anything for the laptop, anyway I am suppose to hear from him today.

No joy. The guy I sent the laptop to say's it's an internal DC power supply problem. But since I am not the original owner, Dell won't sell the repairer the replacement part.
I asked if maybe a electronics tech might be able to fix the problem, but according to him I can't get anyone locally to do it.
I wouldn't mind sending it back to Dell, but again the ownership problem comes up. Oh well it only cost me 25 dollars to check it out. Shame it will just fillup some landfill

you could try ebay or do a google search, I am sure someone sells the power supplies besides Dell. |
