WHen reformatting the laptop it needs 2 partitions or else it wont run the CD's...!!!!!!
I went thru the same trauma and found out the hard way.
What I do is use Windows 98 to boot from CD and format the hard drive.
Then, DO NOT install the Windows 98 operating system.
Also, you can find any utility that will format your hard drive. I bet you will find plenty of freeware Startup disks online. Windows 98 use to have the feauture to create the start up disk, XP does not have it.
Ok, lets go back...
1. Boot with CD support, select you want to format to install Windows 98.
2. Do not install Windows 98, reboot.
3. Have ready a floppy with Boot Disk drives. Make sure you have fdisk.
Create 2 partitions: One of 75% the size of your HD and the other (well) 25%, daaa. Something like that, as long as you have 2 partitions.
Once the two partitions are created restart the system with the SONY recovery CDs. If it does not work, be patient, repeat all steps ( I know its time consuming...suck it up), keep going!
Walla, thats it. IF you dont know how to create the 2 partitions find some friend and tell them you want 2 partitions to run the system recovery.
Why is this?
Thats the way companies make money, customer support. Some people dont have the patient to deal with it and pay, I have a lot of down time and a few geek friends who help a lot.
Doctor, shrink and a lawyer is what people use to have to make it in life.
In 2006 you need a cell phone, a good video card and a geek friend., lol.
