I never found a lack of performance with 512 however with 1024 i can now open insanely large numbers of applications at once with no problems. With 1024 RAM i was running all of Macromedia Studio MX, Some of Microsoft .net (visual basic, c++). Adobe photoshop7, GTA3, warcraft 3, diablo 2, UT2k3 (gotta love virtual cd-rom drives). and a bunch of IE windows + instant messengers finally got me up to 1000 mb of RAM usage on win xp pro.

but back to the point in question. A SO-DIMM of ddr pc2100 for laptops runs around 135 dollars. If you have the money laying around I'd go for it. But I wouldnt rob your savings too badly for this upgrade. As with all computer parts what it really boils down to is how much money you have to spare

A gig of RAM on a laptop is really not necessary unless you're using something that needs that much RAM or you're multitasking that many applications at once. But, if you have the money to spare and want to buy it, go for it.

I understand you can open More Programs at once with windows, But how will Effect Gaming?

This was My primiary Goal when Asking this?
I like to play games, but some Games, well Below my Resources, are running a Bit Jittery.

    Is this My Video Card?
    I have 32MB ATI Mobility 7500..

Example:::::Unreal's Frame rate, at High settings, Is poor. Im thinking I need more Memory. Unreal shouldn't be effected, it only requires 8MB of Video Ram to run in 3D and 16MB for best Performance.

    HELP!!

Well, if you`re looking to improve your gaming, then the 1GB of RAM wouldn`t help much here.
Check and see if your video adaptor is upgradable .. other than the video and CPU powers, nothing will (majorly) change your gaming performance.

It's definitely your video card. 512MB of RAM is enough for me to run UT2003 and GTA: VC fine (though with a GeForce4).

When they say "best performance", especially on a game as old as Unreal, it'd probably mean something like 30-60FPS at 1024x768.. I'm pretty sure that game came out around the same time as the Tnt2.

Depends on what kind of memory it uses...if it's DDR you probably won't see much increase...else it's possible to see a considerable increase. I just upgraded my HP Pavilion from 256mb to 768mb...lots faster.

512 is enough compared to modern programs that you wont see much difference unless you do major vid editing, 3d design, or hezvy multitasking. i often have 40 browser windows open and play games with no problem on 512

Actually the game "PlanetSide" needs more than 512MB ram to run without any chopping. It's the first game I've seen more than 512 and I'm sure more will follow. I checked just now with this 1 IE window open and Planetside going I was using 656MB of RAM out of the 1024 in my system. That was with no other apps running. If using 512 I've noticed in various desktop and laptops there will be a light chop.

To verify it's not your video card causing it, you can download FRAPS and check your frames.

It was probably just your system that needed more RAM than that to play the game...no game recommends more than 512mb of RAM in a system to play smoothly.

Doesn't Win XP require at least 256MB of System Ram? Then, If you Through in a Game that requires it to have, say 256MB of Memory, Wouldn't the Games FPS be Choppy? This of course, you have 512MB

I Know for sure, if the harddrive begins to get full, say less then 15%, that games get Choppy.

At around $125(from Crucial) a stick I'd say not worth it.

    Lightbulb

Having the extra Ram also facilitates the elimination of the Windows Swap file. Since any disk activity takes more power use than comparable Ram activity, doing so helps increase your potential battery life...very important for computing on the road.
