I just had the same problem, although it looks like I'm several years late for this thread. I solved it by going to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> National Semicinductor DP83815-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter -> Power Management, then deselecting "Allow teh computer to turn off this device to save power". My guess is this is not being properly applied when system tries to go into standby or hibernate. Once I deselected this checkbox, I was able to go into standby just fine. Thank you to Telexen for mentioning that he had to disable network connection prior to hibernate. That's what lead me to find this solution for my laptop.
