hello im new here but i have a question.
Im interested in buying a laptop from Best Buy, and i have it narrowed down to two notebooks.
one has the AMD Atholon 2400 the second has the Pent4 3.06 ghz. ofcourse the Pent4 is about $350 more, and i know its not a even comparison due to price and speed.
I was told that the AMD 2400 that operates at 1.8 ghz is about the same as the P4 2.4 ghz that operates at about 1.9 ghz, is this true?
What would you recomend i get?
Toshiba P4 3.06 ghz $1399
HP / compaq AMD 2400 $1049
i have a desktop AMD right now, i run 2-3 programs at once (photoshop, Illustrator, net) so what are your opionions?
thank you in advance

I'm not sure about the first question. Toshiba with p4, sounds cute. Just because I'm not into AMD stuff. Its up to you, you're the buyer
The 3rd question asking in what opinion you mean?

| a P4 2.4Ghz operates at 2.4Ghz
There are many more considerations, like graphix card, ram, had drive space, screen size, bundled software that could make one a better.
the AMD might be better on battery life if thats a consern.
So i dont really have a difinitive answer hehe, If your using Photoshop and Ilistrator why not get a sexy new Powerbook G4? |

sorry about not being clear on that one guys.
i ment what is your opinion on the better processor for AI PSD, i dont do that much graphics on the notebook, just when im at work i need to whip up some ads, invoices, and surfing the net.
i was told that a pent 2.4 ghz runs at 1.9 ghz, but peak is 2.4, and that it was comparable to the 2400 AMD that operates at 1.8 ghz. so i guess that was a lie? |

most new laptops have technology (SSE or something, i forget the term) that throttles down the CPU to a slower speed while your just surfing or checking your email. But when you run your photoshop filter it jumps it up to 2.4ghz or 3.06ghz (or whatever the top speed is) without you noticing, then turns it back down. Most laptops you can turn this feature on or off. It's for reducing heat and conserving battery life. AMD and P4's have it so all you really need to worry about is the peak speed. |

Plus, some say the average speed of CD-ROM is actually 32x, not 52x or 64x Is this something true? So that was a lie to eh? |

My opinion is I wouldn't go with such a big processor. 2.4Ghz Intel or 2600+ AMD is about as high as I would go. Past that, you're not only paying much more for what I would consider only a little more processor, but you're also getting into higher battery drain. Just not the direction I would take my laptop.
I've been shopping around casually for a laptop for a few months now. Though I don't think I'll be getting one this year, perhaps Q2 next year. I like what I've been reading about the Pentium M processors, so I want to wait for those laptops to get decent for about $1300.
And the link is for you to just compare prices...these guys have a heck of a rating, and I will likely be choosing them for my notebook when I finally get around to it.

well i needed a notebook today BAD, i couldnt find an AMD big enough so i over-bought at Best Buy and got a Toshiba 3.04 ghz for $1400, and i got there ZERO percent interest which is the real reason i got it. But it should pay for itself at work (i hope)
I'll keep you guys posted on what i think of my first Pentium.
if you have any good or bad info on this notebook, please let me
know.
Thanks Guys/Gals
