Just a thought. You can build your own desk top computer.
Can you build your own laptop? |

its possible, but alot of consideration has to be put into cooling which is a major factor with laptops
so it wouldnt be worth it |

You can buy cases that have MB, etc. in them, that allow you to pick the processor, HD, memory, etc. |

Its totally different from building a desktop since everything is compacted and its a different system. I wouldnt recommend custom built of notebooks, but there are people that are pretty good at it. But I stay with Jason's speach, it would be worth it

I would almost guess you would have to be a reseller with a resellers license to buy some of the stuff.....like from Ingram Micro, InfotelUSA, TechData, MA Labs etc.

I want to build a laptop also. The only thing I came up with is to use a mini-itx motherboard but those things have no way of running on a laptop type battery. |

a mini-itx mb doesn't need much power, actually. it's the peripherals, such as HDD (higher rpms demand more power), cd-rom drives, and optical drives, usb devices, which are power-hungry.
my mini-itx has a 150W psu, which is relatively large for mini-itx standards...which hover around 60-80Watts.
*edit: and therefore, a battery could, in fact power the puter, you would just have to pay a LOT of attention to what devices will be run, how much power you would need, and if the battery would viably run those peripherals. there ARE 2.0GHz processors in laptops, sucking a lot of power out...keep in mind that for the average builder, COST is the main barrier to a sucessful project, not "can it be done?" (end of edit*)
for modded mini-itx cases, most use external laptop-type psu's...for space considerations. ever notice on a laptop psu cord the large ac/dc inverter on the cord?
I agree though...building a true laptop would be a costly endeavor...not that it's impossible, just expensive and hard to find parts. most likely it would be a hybrid of old laptop parts, and new innards (mb, cpu, psu, ram)

| I found it!
Go to http://www.freewebs.com/trekkiejt to see exactly what you are looking for. This thing is also near standard size! Exactly the parts and even where to buy them. Mini-ITX, slim drives, even a battery for mobility. I work for a small computer company that repairs computers including laptops so I have had the oportunity to dig into a wide variety of makes, models, and ages of laptops as well as some customizing. I haven't finished this yet but it is looking good so far. |
