no display on compac laptop

hi, i have a compac presario 900 and the display decided to stop displaying. i have no idea on what to do. i'm an ase auto master tech and thought maybe i could take it apart and maybe see something out of the ordinary but it proved almost destructive to try and break her open. what can i do? maybe some one out there know a trick to open her up. if i do, what sould i look for? thanks a bunch.

Back when we did warranty work on Compaq products we used a case splitting tool to open up laptops. It was really nothing more than a piece of hard plastic 60mm x 30mm x 5mm. 10mm from one end it was tapered down to a sharp point.

The idea was to remove the screws holding the case together and then pry the case open with your fingers wide enough to get the tool started. Then by "walking" the tool around the edge of the case it would spread it causing the little plastic catches to unsnap.

You could have a broken cable going from the main board up to the LCD. Also the backlight for the LCD could be blown. Worst case the video on the main board could be hosed.

If the backlight for the LCD is out, you should still be able to see some sort of image on the screen if you look extremely close. If the videocard is hosed you may get a beep code from the BIOS.

Try hooking it up to an external monitor. At least if that works you can narrow it down to simply an issue with the display screen of the laptop.
