ibm thinkpad hibernation problem

i have an ibm thinkpad laptop, that will not come out of hibernation mode. It is running win 98. The problem occured when I was networked to desktop using xp. The transfer of files went well then everything went downhill. The laptop locked up. I have goback installed on laptop and thought i would just goback before the installation of pcmia network card and software and some files xp wanted me to install on 98 (laptop) When i power cycled the laptop goback started and then froze in mid boot. When i powercycled again nothing happened. When power is applied the laptop goes straight to hibernation mode. Tried everything i can think of any help would be greatly appreciated...........

i had an ibm a30 thinkpad with win 98 and had hibernation problems also. i never had the problem you described but if i would leave my laptop for some time it would go into hibernation which is what it is supposed to do but i could never get it out of hibernation. i found that you can bring it out of hibernation by pressing the fn hot key and then pressing the escape key. you have to give it a couple seconds cause it wont come out of hibernation right away. i never liked that hibernation mode myself so what i did was go into the bios and disable it. if you disable it you should not have any more problems i think, like i said i never had my laptop hibernate during boot mode but win 98 is much more finicky about hibernation modes. i upgraded my a-30 to win xp pro and it ran much smoother than 98. i hope this info helps, if you have any more problems just reply to your thread.

I came across a similar issue before. I found out it is believed to be a glitch with an overcharged capacitor inside the unit on the T series laptop. To remedy the problem, first remove any batteries (i.e., the internal battery and the Ultrabay battery, if installed) from the unit. Next, you need to drain any remaining charge from the capacitor: With the batteries removed, hold the power button down for at least 90 seconds. The overcharge should completely drain, and you can then reconnect the batteries or AC power and turn on the unit. I have not actually tried this myself. Hopefully your results will be positive.

I had the same problem and when I called IBM support thats exactly what she had me do. I think what Jack Hannibal said is a good place to start!

This suggestion works. I had the above problem with my IBM ThinkPad T43 after it went into hibernation one day. We did exactly that...removed the battery, removed the AC Power, held the power button in for several seconds, then replaced everything & it booted fine.
