| Buying a new mobo. Need some advice
I have a P4 2.53ghz with 533FSB. I am thinking about getting the DFI Lanparty 865PE, with the i865PE chipset. Good idea or not Also right now I have some crappy PC2700 memory. What kind and what speed should I get? I was going to buy some PC3700 for my amd system. Should I go ahead with something above PC3200 so that I will have the option to upgrade cpu's soon to something with 800FSB? |

Then why did you post a reply to it....?
If you want to goto a 800mhz fsb processor soon you need at least PC3200.
Some popular brands are... crucial, kingston, geil, ocz, mushkin, corsair. Anyone of those should be fine. Alot of those brands offer "higher quality" versions that have lower latencies, but again, if you are going to overclock dont bother
I woudlnt bother with PC3500 unless you were going to overclock a 800mhz fsb like hell, and PC3700 is just plain a waste of money |

I think the thread reads fine...... Well Ive been pondering this as well for last couple of weeks as well and the general consensus that I recieve is... if You are not an over-clocker (which is me) then you would want match the ram speed to the front side bus speed...someone please correct me if I am wrong |

Going to try to push this thing as far as I can and I don't think that PC2700 is going to cut it. Also looking at some MSI boards. Are these good overclockers? (MSI "Neo2-PFISR " i865PE). If you don't understand then chances are you don't need to hit the reply button dude. |

glover is correct about non-overclocking matching the FSB. Of course there is a slight translation to be done, as DDR (double data rate) memory clocks at twice the speed of the FSB. Thus 400mhz RAM, labeled as PC3200, should be run on 200mhz motherboard FSBs. Now Intel Multiplies 4x the motherboard FSB speed, thus an 800mhz p4 = 200mhz mobo = pc3200.
If you want to overclock, latency and quality are important as is some overhead in the speed.
Some of the best stuff you can get is Corsair XMS... but its also extremely expensive (like 150%-175% the price of regular ol' ram for the same speed/size).
If the CPU multiplier is not unlocked, and you overclock by raising the FSB, you then would want to have some overhead with the memory. Thus if you want to overclock an 800mhz p4 its prolly best to go with some PC3500 (although pc3200 would work to a limit, especially if you relaxed the memory timings) |
