| AMD Buffs - Need help. Switching from intel, need info on latest amd mobos, processor
Im finally making the switch after being hypontized by intels rocket high GHZ. I need to know whats the latest stuff happenign with AMD. Whats the latestt motherboards, is there a new chipset coming soon? new processors out (and features, kb,fsb, ect)?.Fill me in here what should I know / be looking for motherboard/cpu wise? And can anyone educate me about AMD's status with overclocking. Do you get anything out of it. or just better to not toy with em. And is the heat problem still there? |

Well, I know that I dont want a value PC ( sempron thing) I heard something about a 939 new chipset? (however I also read there is a 940, but the 939 is newer? ) I want something that will allow me to upgrade in the future. And whats the most "praised" amd motherboard? (In micro-atx form by chance?) |

939 is a newer socket type, although i don't think the chipset really changed for it. From what i've heard the nforce3-250gb is supposed to be a very good chipset for the 64's.
Socket 939 is the newest socket type, which will be for the athlon64's and the athlonFX processors with socket 940 staying for the opteron. Previously socket 940 was for the AthlonFX and the Opteron, and socket 743 (or thereabouts) was for the athlon64 if i remember right.
As far as most praised amd mobo for micro-atx i have no idea. Check out www.amdmb.com for some good comparisons in addition to anandtech, tom's hardware, and hardocp. |

939 is a socket, not a chipset. The two top chipsets for 939 CPUs are the Nforce3 250 and the K8T800Pro. Socket 939 CPUs come in 3500+ and 3800+ flavors at the moment and they have a Dual Channel memory controller built into the CPU die itself.
I don't believe there is a micro-atx 939 board out at the moment, but new stuff is popping up every day. There aren't very many boards that have been released yet for 939, so take your pick on www.newegg.com .
As far as overclocking I've only seen one article on these newer CPUs, the 3500+ seems to easily overclock to 3800+ and 4000+ or more speeds with a little cooling. The heat fom these chips isn't as bad as a Prescott at this point in time. AMD and Intel have begun to reverse roles in the heat area.

the nforce4 chipset is coming soon (not sure how soon but its coming) it will support pci express and i think ddr2...but for right now i would choose the k8t800 over the nf3....there is also a socket 939 fx-53 in addition to the 3500 and 3800+ stated above |

Meh, guess im staying with intel then. (for now atleast) I dont want to replace my case and stuff. Customized how I like it. I dont like atx boards. Like my pc's to be 15'' tall max. sigh, oh well. Guess I'll have to wait (if they ever do release a matx form 939). If intel can release their high end platforms in matx, why cant amd. :-( |

There are plenty of matx mobos for socket 754(Athlon64 2800+ to 3700+), I'm sure it won't take long for smaller form factors to come out.

well if you want a socket 939 matx board period you'll have to wait. Socket 939 was only announced 2 months ago and the first atx motherboards have just been getting to retailers within the last few weeks. So give it a few months and you should see some matx pcie boards appear. heck newegg only has 3 939 boards total, and one isn't even in stock yet. |
