Intel 925x or 915 chipset?

Hi all,

I'm helping a friend build a computer and we need to pick out a motherboard. Does anyone have any sites with good reviews on the differences between the 915 and 925 series Intel chipsets? Any opinion on which chipset would be better for an engineer who will be doing a lot of AutoCAD and Matlab with their computer? Thanks for your help.

the 925 will do everything as good or better than the 915 can but it only supports ddr2 and not ddr1/2 so i think its not worth the price especially if you have to go with ddr2 ram right now

there's really very little reason to go w/either the 915 or 925...you'd be better off sticking w/a standard 478 socket mobo.

the new chipset is still very new and not marketplace tested re: compatibility. and pci-E benchmarks show that they only run as fast as or even slower than agp 8x cards.

so it all depends on who's footing the bill for the new machine. if your friend is paying out of his own pocket, i would not buy the L775 boards yet.

Thanks for the info Prester John. My friend decided to go with a more budget conscious system with the 478 socket like you recommended. He's getting an Abit IC7-G motherboard with 1GB DDR Kingston PC3200 RAM, a 200GB SATA Western Digital drive, a new case from TigerDirect (he likes one in particular from there...), a DVD+/-RW drive, and a P4 3.0GHz w/ 800MHz bus. Sound good? I hope so... it's already all ordered!

i don't think it was that great of a decision...yes you will save a little now but when you go to upgrade you will have to shell out more

but don't sweat it it will be a nice system anyways
