| Memory/DIMM slot question....
Hi all,
I'm looking to upgrade my mobo, most of the one's I've looked at can have a max of 3 GB of memory, I'm leaning towards a board that uses dual channel memory rather than non-dual channel memory. My question is what's the difference and advantage/disadvantage if 2 boards I'm looking at where both can have a max of 3 GB of memory but one has 6 DIMM slots whereas another may have 3-4 DIMM slots and does the amount of DIMM slots make the board more versatile for upgrades? |

well I actually know of no boards that come with more than 3 and VERY rarely 4 slots for memory, dual channel or otherwise...
standard is 3 dimm slots and only 2 are used for dual channel
what boards are you looking at? |

Practically all dual-channel RAM boards using Intel's or AMD's setup do have four slots.
The 3-GByte limit comes from the 32-bit-ness of most systems. This is because total address space in 32-bit mode is only 4 GBytes, of which all the system essentials, AGP card, AGP aperture, PCI devices and other misc bits and pieces take up some. |

Well I gotta sorta disagree... maybe you know something I dont but if you search NewEgg for motherboards and choose 3 Dimm slots you get 5 pages worth...
choose 4 slots (the highest option) and you barely get one... |

Care to show me a socket-939 board that has three DIMM slots? All I've seen so far have four.
Three DIMM slots is the most common setup for single-channel RAM slots, and has been the standard setup for NVidia's Athlon chipsets, despite their dual-channel RAM controller. |

OK... actually I hadnt realized newer Intel boards were coming out with up to 6 slots...
And all I said was 3 Dimms were much more commaon... and they are... and 4 dimms was more rare... its still about 5 to 1
All this is rather null anyway till we know what type of CPU this upgrade board will have to support...
optinox... what are your other specs... cant help much unless we know the type of things you will be transferring to the new board..
