Help, Help, Help!!!!!! A7v8x-x And K7s5a
I have two boards. A7V8X-X AND K7S5A, both are not working. I posted before and did not receive any replies. Perhaps I didn't ask the correct questions or maybe folks are not interested, but I'm trying one last time and combing the problems.
I was using the A7V8X-X board with AMD Athlon 2600+/333 cpu with 512/3200 mem. My system began rebooting in a loop, never going into XP Pro. I saved my info and tried to reformat my drive. Drive could not be detected. Used a forum (not this) and they suggested changing the power supply (?) which I did, problem was not solved. I changed the memory, then the video, and same problem. I put mem and video into another system i have (K7S5A) and everything worked fine. I called AMD and they exchanged the cpu which they claimed was defective with a 3000+/333 CPU. I'm getting a long beep looped. Driving me crazy
I removed the new CPU and replaced it with CPU from the K7S5A which is a 1700/133 and it still gets the beep. Now I return to the other board K7S5A, until I can correct this problem. I put the new Cpu and mem on the board and I get 1long and 8short beeps and then a pause with 2short and then 1short. I return the original Cpu and memory to the board and get the same. cmos memory error when it comes on (TWICE). PLEASE HELP! SOMEBODY -- ANYBODY

The K7S5A has come alive - hence the beeps. CMOS error is normal, you need to enter BIOS setup, load defaults, make your special choices, then save and exit. You might want to deliberately erase the settings it has now - disconnect mains power, then move "CMOS clear" jumper to Clear, then back to Normal.
You must be aware that this board can only do 133 MHz CPU bus, not the 166 required by your faster CPU.

Thanks, I did all of that. Went into BIOS setup and changed date and time, tried load defaults. I erased the settings. Did the jumper thing. Am still getting the beeps with no video, thus no cmos error and can't get into setup.

And you went into BIOS how, if you got no video?

System did boot twice. Each time I received the cmos error and went into setup. It stopped booting into windows, absolutely no video now.

Clear the CMOS (by jumper), and try again. This time try not to make choices in BIOS that don't let it boot anymore. If unsure, ask for assistance!
(Oh, and don't even think of booting into a Windows installation that has been made on a substantially different system.)

-if you are getting video everytime you clear the bios with the jumper switch, but lose it after it boots for the first time, im guessing your cpu is being detected at a lower or default value/us speed after the cmos settigns get erased, but when the defaults get loaded, it is messing soemthing up, when you go in the bios do you have an option to lower the bus speed or load fail safe settings?

When in doubt, I use a Win98 boot disk to rummage around. You can also try Knoppix linux. It has saved me when a machine buys the farm.
We had a virus that caused our machines to go into a boot loop. When trying to install SP2, it would lock up and go into boot loop. We had to clean out the virus and then "reinstall/repair" XP.

Jeamel Help!
I am asking for assistance. That is why I'm using this forum, Peter M I have tried most of these things. I am using the same HDD that was running prior to having problems. I have an AMD Athlon Xp 3000+/333 Cpu. what would be the settings for this?
Any suggestions for the ASUS A7V8X-X Board? If I could get one of them working it would be nice. Both were working fine, maybe it's the case

I don't see those settings. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place.

Erm, the K7S5A doesn't do 166 MHz CPU bus ("333" for the marketing folk). You probably got a serious power supply problem with that as well - that'd explain your powerup problems.
K7S5A ends at 133 MHz bus, highest supported CPU is 2600+/133.

the best suggestion i can give is either to read your mobo manual or download it in pdf form and read up,
normally in the back oif the manual or somewhere in it it discribes what the beeps mean, e.g. if it was my mobo and my ram was stuffed it would beep three times. pause, beep three times, pause, so forth... so i am thinking read the manual and u should be able to narrow the problem down, b/c atm it sounds like u don't know if it is the mobo, grpahics card, psu, chip, ram

I was able to get the system up and into the bios, however, the bios shows Duron K7 and won't let me make adjustments. The original Cpu is 1700/133. As i said before I changed the power supply (300) and the video card (ATI 9200), memory (512/3200), and battery. I added a new HDD (160 gig), but on initial boot there is no display, must restart and go thru the error message "did not shut down......." and wait for the timer to reach 0. If I hit enter or any key it will not boot into windows, must wait for timer to run down. I don't have the manual or the setup CD.
I have never had these problems with any of my previous systems. This is really a pain.

(1) The board needs a BIOS update to recognize the CPU. You still won't be able to run it at full speed then.
(2) Don't even think of booting into a Windows installation that has been done on a substantially different mainboard.

I'm running the 1700+\133 Cpu with my 512\3200 memory, then i formatted and loaded winXP Home on my HDD (160) 7200. whenever i boot you can hear the beeps but without video display, then i will reboot and the display will come up, but not boot into windows. i must reboot (reset button) three, sometimes four time before it will go into windows. what's going on here?
I'm ready to burn everything.
I like my Asus board better.
