Not necessarily even though it is probably reccomended for best results...
sometimes you can simply try booting to see how well the operating system handles the switch, if that doesnt work, you can use the repair option from booting off the CD.
What OS.... and what are you upgrading from/to? |

is your XPHome on a restore disk... or is it retail/OEM?
XP is quirky... Ive had it accept a major overhaul of components one time and then get all buggy just because I switch some pci cards...
give it a try... do the switch and try to boot normally, if that doesnt work, try safe mode and delete all the mainboard drivers, if your still having trouble, boot from the CD and do the second repair option, it will delete the main windows folders and reinstall windows leaving everything but your outlook express E-mail and favorites intact. back these up before doing so... |

the restore disk will not work with a motherboard besides the original, there will also most likley be compatibility issues with the case/psu
if you have a friend with a real disk you can use that and your key

It's called "Reinstall" rather than Repair I think. |
