Hi!
Bought a new mobo and cpu for a familymember to upgrade their old (really old) system. Had a spare ATX-case, and a 256 DDR400 memory stick and figured this would work nicely with the mobo and cpu. Only problem is: It won't give me any kind post.. No beeps, no boot-screen, no bios no nothing. Everything fires up, hd initiates, cpu fan powers up, all lights go online, but the screen remains dead and i get no beeps or anything at all.
Now.. the PSU in the old case is one of those old 20-pin ones, and the mobo has a 20-pin socket + a separate 4 pin socket some ways off.. do i need to get a new PSU and get the extra power for it ?
Here's a complete setup:
Abit VA-10 mobo
Sempron 2400+ CPU bundled with cooler
Adata 256mb DDR400
Old crappy HD (works, confirmed on my own machine)
That's it.. no extension cards, nothing. Using onboard GPU, sound etc..
Any suggestions on what might be wrong with this darn thing would be appreciated.
Note, i have tried the short-test, removed mobo from case, fired up, still nothing.. |

I had the exact same issue with a new motherboard about 7 weeks ago.. tried another power supply (which worked in another system) and video card.. ram.. etc.
Unfortunately it was the motherboard.. and I had to RMA it.

I'm beginning to think the mobo is a dud myself.. hate it when that happens.
I need to be absolutely sure though that i won't be needing those 4 extra powerpins to get it to work, cause if i RMA the mobo and it turns out to be okay it'll cost me 50$ extra, and i'm in no mood for that, not now, not ever
So that's really my question: Should the mobo and cpu run even without those 4 extra powerpins ? Or do i need to upgrade the PSU to a newer one with a total of 24 pins for power ? |

Oh.. guess I read your original thread wrong but yes.. for the motherboard to work it will need the extra 4 pin connector attached to it so you will have to buy a new power supply. |

I would think you would need that 4 pin connector.....
all new power supplies come with that....and they do make a little adapter for older supplies to give it that extra 4 pin connector...probably compusa has it

the manual says that it is recommended to get at least a 300w supply and they specifically mention a 20A +5vdc supply
and they call it an "ATX 12v" supply..so possibly they are reffering to that extra 4 pin connector because I know that is a 12v connector
that sempron 2400 is probably drawing a lot more juice than the old one |

Oh well, nothing to do then except get a new supply or a converter.. thanks for the help guys! Would've been kinda useful if there was a list of cpu's and whether they need the extra pins or not.. maybe there's even one around ? |
